Layering is extremely important for Autumn and Winter dressing. Not only does it keep you warm, but it is super fun to do! It is also a way in which you can wear pieces that you would normally reserve for your Spring and Summer wardrobe. This way, you can wear your wardrobe all year round!
Because I am so short, it is important for me to get the proportions right when styling a layered outfit. Therefore, I always wear cuts that fit me correctly, and allow my body to appear much taller than it actually is (oh the joys of only being 4'9").
Black and white are certainly staples this season, but don't be afraid to mix them up. Pairing different textures, patterns and shapes with black and white is a great idea if you want to steer away from the norm and stand out. This textured knit definitely adds a touch of chic to the outfit, paired over the crisp, white dress.
Yes, you read it correctly- this is in fact a dress! Throughout summer I wore this beautiful All Saints dress over and over, so I couldn't resist putting it away when it started to get a little chilly. Pairing a white dress over leather tights is a great way to keep you warm and to provide a really cool layered effect.
The trick to layering? Get the proportions right. You will notice in this outfit, that I have little sections of skin showing at equal points, in order to balance out the look. On the top, the collared neckline with the slight cut on the jumper and the added necklace, makes for a great structured, starting point.
At the waist, the white dress with button closure down the middle, paired with the 3/4 sleeved jumper, adds an even effect as well as structure. On the bottom, the leather tights finish at the ankle, and the cut off ankle boots balance out the look.
Layering for Autumn and Winter isn't difficult, but make sure that you get it right before stepping out the door. I suggest you head to your wardrobe right now and start experimenting with different items, and see what works for you! Don't forget to always add a touch of individuality with accessories as well. Happy layering!
