My time spent at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) has been absolutely incredible. All of my classes were informative, the tutors we were taught by all have experiance in the Fashion/ PR industry which made our way of learning in Florence different and definitely better then back home in Australia, and I have made some friends that I will never forget!
In the 4 weeks spent at the IED all 16 of us girls were amazed and constantly impressed by the style of teaching and learning that was provided for us. Our PR teachers Claudia and Flores have a wide ranging experiance in the fashion PR industry, as they own their own PR company here in Florence. Classes with these talented ladies were filled with really insightful information on PR in the fashion industry and how it diferentiates from PR in any other sector: "Once you have a career in in fashion PR- you can have a career anywhere".
Alberto and Troy were our professors in branding, and wow was this an interesting class! Both of these men organise fashion runway shows and whilst we were studying with them they were in the process of organising the latest Calvin Klein fashion show. Talk about experiance in the industry!
Our third and favourite class was conducted by Camilla- a incredible woman who has the most experience in fashion events around Italy. I can't describe to you have insightful and amazing this women was- she definitely taught us everything from how to run an event- even how to bribe people into giving you free supplies when organising a fashion show (yes this included getting your boobs out!)
The aim of this course was to organise an event for an Italian company. In this case- our company was D.A.T.E. sneakers. All 16 of us were assigned jobs to do pre, during and post event and I was lucky enough to be placed in the PR team. My job included putting together the press kit- which consisted of media releases, company profiles and other company information, organising and running the social media on the night, constructing and managing the guest list, as well as managing the VIP's and special guests on the night.
Our final event went off with a bang! Guests flooded through the doors of the venue and had an amazing night immersing themselves in the culture and atmosphere of the D.A.T.E. label through an event that we had all organised! I was lucky enough also, to be offered an internship with a company in Florence- however had to turn it down as I have to return to Australia!!! Having said that- I can definitely say that I will be back here at the end of next year after I have completed my University degree. There are so many fashion opportunities here in Florence and Italy and there is no way I'm going to miss out on any of them!
Living and studying in Florence has been the best thing I have done in a very long time. The people I have met, the friends I have made and experiences I have had, I know will stay with me for a long time! For ANYONE that is interested in a career in fashion, events or PR I highly recommend you study a course at the IED. Not only are you provided with professors that are ranked quite high in the industry and know their stuff- but you're also immersed into a culture that has an undying love and passion for the fashion industry. Studying in a country where top designers have originated also makes the experience so much more real and insightful!
Love you all
